Leipzig-Halle Airport (ICAO: EDDP) is situated in Saxony, close to Leipzig and Halle. Almost two million passengers per year travel to or from this airport. The new and modern airport terminal structure extends over the adjacent motorway and railway. The terminal access is south of the railway while the runway 08L/26R parallels the driveway north of the railway, requiring aircraft to taxi on a bridge over the tracks and roads. The recent DHL move in early 2008 from Brussels Airport to Leipzig as its European hub dramatically increased the cargo traffic. One of the most unusual aspects of Leipzig-Halle is the large number of tour operators sales offices within the airport building. This is apparently the result of regulations that permit discount operations within airport terminals. Another feature of the airport is the adjoining modern Porsche factory, with special facilities for visitors and conventions. |
